Where we get our wood from

Strict quality criteria. Excellent quality.

Wherever possible, we source our wood from Austria, the DACH region and neighboring European countries. The carbonized larch – our bestseller – even comes exclusively from Austrian sawmills! All of Ennobled’s wood comes from sustainable forestry. This is guaranteed by internationally recognized certificates such as FSC and PEFC.

We pay attention to strict quality criteria

When procuring wood at the sawmill, we pay attention to characteristics such as the origin and quality of the wood, the cut of the wooden boards and certain wood properties, such as knottiness.

Below you will find an overview of how wood procurement works at Ennobled.

How wood procurement works
at Ennobled

Special sorting in the sawmill

To begin with, our timber is individually selected and sorted at the sawmill.

Quality criterion no. 1: Our woods are FSC and PEFC certified

We only use wood from sustainable forestry for our Deep Charred Wood. Internationally recognized certificates such as FSC and PEFC ensure that the wood we source from the sawmill complies with ecological, social and environmental standards.

Quality criterion no. 2: We use wood with a special cut

Woods that are less suitable for processing with our traditional deep-charring process are sorted out at the sawmill.

For example, heartwood planks that are carbonized and then brushed and finished produce an inconsistent, unclean result. For this reason, we prefer wood with a special tangential cut for this process – the so-called flake cut – where the flake* is optimally accentuated after brushing.

The rift cut, for example, is very common with other manufacturers. Although this ensures good stability and reduces cracking, it produces a less attractive overall appearance with carbonized and subsequently finished woods. As the dimensional stability of our woods is improved by traditional deep charring anyway, we prefer the flake cut. This ensures that a unique look with a special surface structure, coloring and texture is created when finishing our woods.

*The flader is a curved annual ring that becomes visible when the tree trunk is cut parallel to the longitudinal axis.
In our refined woods, the veining on the surface is particularly attractive.

Quality criterion no. 3: Our woods have little to no knots

We also sort out wood that has a lot of dead knots in the sawmill. Processing with our traditional burning method would cause larger knots to fall out, creating knotholes in the wood. For this reason, we take care to use wood that is as knot-free as possible in order to achieve a beautiful, high-quality end result with our deep-charring process.

Quality criterion no. 4: Drying to a wood moisture content of around 15%

Before the wood is subjected to our traditional, vertical deep-charring process, it is also carefully dried so that it ends up with a moisture content of around 15% – ideal for processing using our sustainable Yakisugi firing method! In this way, we can ultimately offer you high-quality, durable and long-lasting quality products.

The quality features of Ennobled

Of course, we also pay attention to various quality features after sourcing and drying our wood! The best example of this is our traditional, vertical deep-charring process according to the Japanese Yakisugi method: it ensures particularly deep, sustainable carbonization of the wood surface – completely without fossil fuels and chemicals.

deepcharred

Did you already know?

Yakisugi is not just Yakisugi: Manufacturers who burn gas industrially also make use of this term!

In contrast, Ennobled uses the “real” yakisugi from ancient Japan: Our traditional, vertical deep charring takes us back to the origins of this sustainable firing method.

We build on sustainability

From wood procurement to after production

However, we are not only promoting the issue of sustainability with our energy-saving firing method – we are also making our wood the sustainable building material of the future with internationally recognized certificates such as FSC and PEFC, exceptional durability and thus long CO2 binding of our wood, natural recycling and participation in environmental initiatives.

Loving craftsmanship and personal advice

Incidentally, all of our wood processing is carried out by hand – from planing and profile processing in our wood factory to the careful packaging of our carbonized and refined wood with a special protective film.

Throughout our entire ordering process, we also offer you personal, expert and individually tailored support!
