Siberian larch wood:
Properties, appearance and areas of application

Use of the Siberian larch wood

Siberian larch wood has a hard surface and is therefore very weather-resistant, durable and stable.

These properties make it the ideal building and construction timber for various applications. From furniture construction, wall and ceiling structures and interior wood panelling to fences and exterior cladding.

In addition to its special quality and versatility, Siberian larch also scores points with its natural colouring in light, yellow to orange brown tones and the beautiful, finely curved wood grain!

The larch under the natural influence of the weather

Under the influence of rain, wind and weather, the reddish-brown larch wood greys over time and its patina takes on a beautiful silver colour.

This transformation takes place very slowly and holistically and creates a beautiful, natural look, designed by nature.

Tip: The untreated larch wood can also be combined well with carbonised or refined woods!

Siberian larch:
Wood species, origin and growth areas

The Siberian larch (Latin: Larix sibirica, English: Siberian Larch) comes from the larch genus, which in turn belongs to the pine family.

As the name suggests, it is mainly local to Siberia, more specifically Russia and Mongolia. There it grows in western Siberia, in the mountains of southern Siberia and in the central plateau of northern Mongolia.

Due to its good technical properties and resilience, the Siberian larch is considered one of the most important forest trees in many parts of Siberia.

Siberian larch:
Description, habitat and characteristics

Characteristics of Siberian larch wood

The Siberian larch grows straight upwards, can reach a height of around 45 metres and is rather slender with a trunk diameter that is usually well under two metres.

It is a particularly frost-hardy conifer, which is why it survives the cold winters in Siberia well. Despite the cold, it grows relatively quickly, which makes it a popular and much-used tree in the timber industry.

Growth of the Siberian larch

As a coniferous tree, the Siberian larch sheds its needles in winter, which means it requires less water and is more resistant to low temperatures.

Its cones tend to be reddish in colour, while mature cones turn light brown.

The heartwood of the Siberian larch differs in colour from the lighter sapwood due to its higher density and reddish-brown colouring. The annual rings in the wood are easily recognisable and provide an interesting wood grain.

Natural durability of the Siberian larch

The natural durability of Siberian larch against wood-destroying fungi is categorised as category 3-4 on average. Depending on the growing region and climatic conditions, untreated Siberian larch can even achieve a natural durability of class 3!

Our top woods from our product range at a glance.

Carbonised woods

Charred black, three-dimensional look, strong character structure

Using our traditional, vertical deep-charring process, our woods are carbonised with pure flame according to the Japanese Yakisugi method, resulting in extremely resistant, durable wood products with a unique, black charred surface structure which, thanks to its exclusive character, is also compared to alligator skin, silk wood or leather.

Refined woods

Traditionally carbonised, brushed and carefully finished by hand.

If you opt for the refined style, the already carbonised wood is then carefully brushed by hand and refined using a special process so that the grain and structure are revealed under the layer of carbon. Depending on the processing and type of wood, our wood finishing creates an exclusive colour look: from elegant silver-grey to an ingenious reclaimed wood look in rustic brown tones.
