Refinement through careful brushing of the wood surface

The refined local larch: versatile working areas and exciting structures

After deep charring, the surface is carefully brushed by hand in our wood manufactory and finished using a special process to bring out the grain, structure and natural color of the larch wood underneath.

Depending on how it is processed, this finishing of the local larch can create different effects – from a rustic old wood look, a sunburnt design, a silver-grey shimmer and a dark, soft brown to shiny or matt black tones.

Carbonised woods

Charred black, three-dimensional look, strong character structure

Using our traditional, vertical deep-charring process, our woods are carbonised with pure flame according to the Japanese Yakisugi method, resulting in extremely resistant, durable wood products with a unique, black charred surface structure which, thanks to its exclusive character, is also compared to alligator skin, silk wood or leather.

Refined woods

Traditionally carbonised, brushed and carefully finished by hand.

If you opt for the refined style, the already carbonised wood is then carefully brushed by hand and refined using a special process so that the grain and structure are revealed under the layer of carbon. Depending on the processing and type of wood, our wood finishing creates an exclusive colour look: from elegant silver-grey to an ingenious reclaimed wood look in rustic brown tones.

All the advantages of local larch refined at a glance

  • Improved weather resistance, resilience and durability

The natural weather resistance of local larch is further improved by the traditional, deep carbonization with a pure flame: this is because the wood cells become denser as a result of our deep-charring process.

This makes the carbonized and refined larch wood even more resistant to moisture, fungi, insects, pests and external influences from wind and weather. These properties make carbonized larch a durable, affordable and easy-care wood product for outdoor use.

  • Water-repellent in outdoor areas

The highly water-repellent properties of local larch refined are also particularly noteworthy.

If the refined larch wood is installed as a facade outdoors, it allows rain showers and water droplets to roll off. As hardly any moisture can penetrate the wood, no wood-destroying fungi can colonize it.

This slows down the natural weathering process, making local larch refined a very durable, high-quality product!

  • Hardly any maintenance and care required

Thanks to their high durability and longevity, facades made of carbonized and finished larch wood are considered very easy to maintain and require hardly any after-treatment.

In contrast to many industrially carbonized woods and painted or glazed facades, our finished wooden facades do not crumble or develop unsightly cracks. Only the patina changes slowly and gradually over several years in a natural process.

  • No chemical wood preservatives required

The carbonized and refined surface protects the larch wood from moisture, insects, fungi, pests, mould, moss, external weather influences and natural wear and tear caused by wind and weather.

Our special surface finish gives the local larch a glossy finish and even more hardness. This means you can dispense with additional treatment with chemical wood preservatives with a clear conscience – our refined, local larch remains a purely natural product!

Installation instructions
for installation

Simple installation of the Ennobled wood

Our carbonized and refined woods are basically just as easy and uncomplicated to install as conventional wooden facades and wall cladding. The construction should be carried out as suspended, rear-ventilated formwork at a distance from the load-bearing wall.

However, make sure you use suitable stainless steel screws for installation! We recommend the high-quality wood screws from the Rothoblaas brand, which we also offer in our online store.

Installation types and profiles

Our wood can be installed either as concealed, invisible screw connections or as visible screw connections.

Concealed, invisible screw connection

Concealed screw fittings are very popular : cladding boards can be attached without visible screws. Please note: The UTS* and UTV* profiles can be concealed with screws! Concealed screwing reduces the cover width by 20 mm, i.e. a standard board width of 145 mm results in a cover width of 125 mm.

Visible screw connection

The visible screw connection is somewhat simpler, all other Ennobled profiles are suitable here. With a visible screw connection, the deck width is only reduced by 10mm, which results in a deck width of 135mm for a standard board width of 145mm.

Fastening with matching stainless steel wood screws

For optimum fastening, facades and wall cladding made of Deep Charred Wood should be installed with the appropriate wood screws!

We recommend the high-quality, rustproof stainless steel screws from the Rothoblaas brand. Depending on the type of wood and intended use, there are special screws that are ideal for installing our carbonized wood:

  • For concealed, invisible screw connections and for fastening tongue and groove boards, you can obtain a special countersunk screw from Rothoblaas from us.
  • For visible screw connections, we recommend the concealed conical head screw from Rothoblaas. The black, grey or brown screw head matches the color of the carbonized or refined wood surface, is ideal for all woods in our range and also guarantees excellent clamping power.

You can easily make individual adjustments with our special blends

It is often the case that individual boards need to be cut and adjusted slightly during installation. Here we recommend our special oils and special sealants so that subsequent adjustments can be made easily and without much effort.

Depending on the product, some of these special mixtures contain small carbonized articles. When sealing the cut edges and the end grain, the coating visually matches the carbonized or refined wood.

Our tip: We are also happy to add the right special blend to your delivery!

The different types of installation with Deep Charred Wood

As a rule, you can install our carbonized timber in the same way as conventional timber façades. This means they can be installed as a closed or open facade, vertically or horizontally:

Horizontal or vertical installation

In principle, both are possible. Most of our projects are installed vertically. However, you can also have our Deep Charred Wood installed horizontally. You can find more information on the installation methods for the respective profiles in our Wood Matrix, which we will be happy to send you on request.

Can be installed as an open or closed facade

You can have our Deep Charred Wood installed as an open or closed facade. Each façade cladding has a different visual effect.

With the open facade, the individual timbers are mounted with a certain distance between them. This type of installation creates an interesting, structured, varied and three-dimensional effect. Our smooth-edged and rhombus profiles are suitable for an open facade.

With a closed facade, the wooden boards are seamless or overlap each other. This closed external cladding clearly sets the windows apart from the facade and also prevents dirt from penetrating between the individual boards. Tongue and groove boards with alternating rebate profiles can be used to install a closed facade.

Wood species, origin and growth areas of the local larch

The European larch comes from the larch genus, which in turn belongs to the pine family. As the name suggests, it is mainly native to Europe. There it is mainly found in the Alps, the High Tatras (highest part of the Carpathian National Park in Slovakia and Poland), the Sudetes (mountain range in Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland) and the Polish lowlands.

As the larch is very light-requiring, it grows naturally mostly in higher, alpine regions and on light-permitted steep slopes with a sub-continental climate. However, due to its great economic importance for furniture and timber construction, it is also cultivated outside its native range in warmer regions.

Wood procurement at Ennobled:

Larch wood from Austrian sawmills

We source our larch wood from here

We source our PEFC-certified, domestic larch wood exclusively from Austrian sawmills!

In the Alpine region, the larch finds optimal climatic conditions for natural and sustainable growth. When procuring wood at the sawmill, we select the timber that is ideal for our traditional deep charring and our lustrous finish according to strict quality criteria.

Learn more about wood procurement

We pay strict attention to quality

We use a special sorting process that helps us to filter out the best possible knot-free and high-quality wooden boards and ultimately obtain the typical, beautifully textured wood surface of our carbonised and refined woods!

After sorting in the Austrian sawmill, our larch wood is also dried for several weeks and then planed by hand in our wood factory and subjected to detailed profile processing in order to optimally prepare it for deep charring.
