FAQ: Ennobled & Yakisugi

Yakisugi, also known as shou sugi ban, is a traditional Japanese method of preserving wood. The wood surface is carbonised by controlled burning, making it more durable and resistant.

At the same time,  Yakisugi gives the wood a black charred, three-dimensional and unique surface structure. As a result, carbonised wood is becoming increasingly popular in modern architecture.

The traditional, vertical burning method from ancient Japan is carried out with a pure flame and without fossil fuels or chemicals, which is why traditionally carbonised wood is considered to be very sustainable and climate-friendly.

In contrast, many manufacturers today use the industrial burning method with natural gas, which releases methane and large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. Industrially carbonised woods are considered less sustainable, yet manufacturers often advertise with the original Yakisugi term.

As Ennobled GmbH, we distance ourselves from the industrial firing method! Our woods are traditionally carbonised by hand with great care.

However, there are also differences in processing, quality and longevity between the traditional and industrial firing methods.

In our special deep-charring process, the woods are carefully carbonised by hand using the traditional Yakisugi method with a pure flame. This enables us to burn particularly deeply – hence the name “Deep Charring”.

Carbonisation causes the wood cells on the surface to become denser, creating a natural protection against moisture, fungi and the effects of the weather. As Ennobled deeply carbonises the wood, Deep Charred Wood is particularly durable, weather-resistant and long-lasting.

At Ennobled, we offer not only carbonised but also refined woods. These woods are first carbonised using the traditional Yakisugi method. The difference is that they are then carefully brushed by hand and finished using a special process.

Brushing brings out the natural wood grain under the carbonised layer. With the additional finishing, various beautiful colour looks can be created – from a rustic old wood look to a sophisticated silver-grey to natural colouring in dark brown tones.

Which variant you prefer – refined or carbonised – is purely a matter of taste. Discover our range of carbonised and refined woods now and find out!

The carbonised wood surface offers natural protection against moisture, fungi, pests, insects, mould, moss and the effects of wind and weather. This is why carbonised wood is considered to be very resistant, durable, water-repellent and long-lasting in outdoor areas. They hardly crumble and do not develop deep cracks into which wood-destroying fungi can penetrate.

Only the patina changes over many years due to the natural effects of the weather, creating a beautiful, uniform overall appearance. Gradually, it takes on a light, silver-grey colour – shaped by nature.

The long-lasting facades, garden fences and other building objects made of carbonised wood also require little to no maintenance and care!

Please note: The prerequisite for this is proper and correct wood processing and treatment of the wood using the traditional Yakisugi firing method. From selecting the right wood, drying and profiling to carbonising and sealing the wood, there are many factors to consider.

We at Ennobled have developed our own production process with the special Deep Charring, which guarantees the best possible quality and durability of the carbonised wood.

In outdoor areas, facades are permanently exposed to the influence of rain, UV radiation, wind and weather. In the case of untreated natural wood, the weathering of the facade becomes noticeable relatively quickly: It cracks, begins to crumble, slowly discolours and sooner or later has to be replaced.

Although this wood is protected by a coat of wood varnish or wood stain, cracks or stains appear on the surface of the wood after a few years at the latest, which is why the facade requires regular maintenance.

Carbonised timber facades have a decisive advantage here: the black carbonised surface protects the wood from moisture, fungi, wind and weather and therefore also from rapid weathering. Even over many years, the carbonised wood hardly crumbles and does not develop any deep cracks. Only the patina changes over a long period of time, gradually acquiring a natural silver-grey colour.

However, this process takes place very slowly and as a whole – in contrast to a painted or varnished facade, no unsightly stains are created.

A carbonised facade therefore requires little to no maintenance and care and still looks beautiful even after many years!

Carbonised wood is considered to be extremely resistant, durable and weatherproof outdoors and is therefore also ideal for facades. The black carbonised wood can withstand the natural effects of rain, wind and weather.

Even over many years, carbonised facades hardly crumble and do not develop deep cracks. Only the patina changes naturally over a long period of time, gradually acquiring a light silver-grey colour.

However, this process takes place very slowly and holistically and in no way detracts from the beauty and durability of the facade – on the contrary: carbonised facades once again present themselves as a fascinating and adaptable wood product, designed by nature.

Yes, all of our carbonised or refined woods are fire protection certified and have fire protection class D-s2, d0.

With a special fire protection coating, our carbonised woods also achieve fire protection class B-s1,d0 – an excellent classification for wood as a building material.

FAQ: Our Service

You can order wood samples and small quantities simply and easily in our online shop. For larger quantities, please let us know your enquiry by phone or email.

As our carbonised woods are high-quality products, we will work with you personally to determine your requirements and advise you on our products. As soon as we have agreed the details, we will send you a customised quote.

In this way, we ensure that you ultimately receive a delivery that is precisely tailored to your wishes and requirements.

We deliver throughout Europe! We handle most of our projects in the DACH region. However, as the demand for our Deep Charred Wood in modern architecture is increasing worldwide, we now supply customers throughout Europe and occasionally even overseas!

If you would like us to send your deliveries to America or other continents, please contact us by phone or send us an enquiry by email. We will then be happy to discuss the general conditions with you personally.

Standard shipping: approx. 3-7 working days
Express shipping: within Austria less than 24 hours, international max. 2-3 working days

How much time passes between the order confirmation and the delivery of our carbonised woods depends primarily on the size of your order.

As all our woods are individually and carefully processed and carbonised by hand, the delivery time for large orders is naturally somewhat longer than for smaller orders. Special customised products according to individual dimensions are no problem for us, but also take a little longer. Transport routes also have an influence on the delivery time, especially for orders outside Europe.

On average, you can expect a delivery time of 6-10 weeks for medium to large orders. This is somewhat longer than with other manufacturers. However, we can also guarantee that you will not receive industrial mass-produced goods from us, but only high-quality, handmade products.

Of course, we can also process smaller orders more quickly – please contact us and we will advise you on the delivery times for your individual project.

Stainless steel wood screws are particularly suitable for mounting our carbonised wood. We recommend the stainless steel screws from the Rothoblaas brand.

Depending on the type of wood and intended use, the following screws from Rothoblaas are ideal for installing our carbonised wood:

For concealed, invisible screw connections and for fastening tongue and groove boards, we recommend the SHS screw from Rothoblaas.

For visible screw connections, we recommend the concealed taper head screw KKT Colour A4 from Rothoblaas. The black, grey or brown screw head matches the colour of the carbonised or finished wood surface, is ideal for carbonised or modified wood and also guarantees excellent clamping power.

You can also order Rothoblaas screws easily and simply via our online shop!

Yes, we are also happy to create renderings with the selected texture of our carbonised or refined woods for you to better present your project. It is best to let us know your requirements when discussing your project in advance.

At your request, we will be happy to organise one of our partner companies to unload your deep-charred wood quickly, easily and safely.

In Austria, for example, we work together with Maschinenring. Of course, you can also organise the unloading yourself – just let us know your preferred option.
