Spruce refined

Spruce refined

Traditionally carbonized. Brushed. Refined.

Our refined spruce fascinates onlookers with its particularly vivid, high-contrast wood surface in different color variations.

The traditional, vertical deep charring gives the spruce additional resistance and durability. It is suitable for various indoor and outdoor applications and is particularly popular as a decorative component of your interior.

Possible color variations

  • Sunburned

With its strong character and rustic old wood look, the spruce Nature/Sunburned is an impressive eye-catcher! Warm and harmonious brown tones alternate with lighter surfaces and black charring.

The high-contrast, three-dimensional wood surface radiates a very special, almost rustic atmosphere and unfolds its full effect in combination with materials such as glass or steel.

  • Summer Grey

The characteristic, distinctive wood structure of the refined spruce is shown to its best advantage in the Summer Grey/Light Grey color variant.

With its shimmering, silver-grey coloring, it looks particularly elegant and chic. Depending on the incidence of light, it presents itself as very multifaceted and versatile.

  • Winter Grey

The refined spruce is extremely elegant and sophisticated with its special and deep grain in the Winter Grey/Dark Grey color variant.

The dark gray goes just as well with chic exterior applications, such as facades for villas or inviting terraces, as it does with an aesthetic interior: especially when combined with soft cream and white tones, the wood brings that certain something to any stylish building project.

  • Modern Brown

Harmonious, dark brown tones and a three-dimensional, deeply textured grain – the Modern Brown/Dark Brown spruce meets every taste!

As an aesthetic design element, it blends elegantly into its surroundings. Modern Brown/Dark Brown spruce is a beautiful, refined wood that will still look just as good years later.

  • Great Black

Modern, stylish and elegantSpruce Great Black offers architects and private customers a wide range of design options.

Its fine, curved lines, gentle shading and attractive wood texture create artistic accents both indoors and outdoors.

Refinement through careful brushing of the wood surface

The refined spruce: Exciting color looks and characteristic grain

After deep charring, the surface is carefully brushed by hand in our wood manufactory and finished using a special process to bring out the grain, structure and natural color of the spruce wood underneath.

Depending on the processing method, this finishing of the spruce can create different looks – the color variations range from the rustic old wood look, sunburnt design, a noble, shimmering silver-grey or a dark, soft brown to matt and glossy black tones.

Dimensions and profiles

Our range includes all common profile types for your interior and exterior construction project. Whether square-edged profiles for open facade cladding or tongue and groove solutions for a closed design. You decide on the variety of possibilities!

  • Standard length: 3m, 4m (special lengths on request)
  • Standard widths: 45mm, 70mm, 95mm, 120mm, 145mm, 195mm
  • Standard thickness: 20mm
  • Possible profiles: SH, RH, UYS, UYV, UTS, UTS*, UTV, UTV*

UTS* and UTV* are suitable for a concealed screw connection, all other profiles are recommended for a visible screw connection. The concealed screw connection reduces the cover width by 20 mm, i.e. a standard board width of 145 mm results in a cover width of 125 mm. In comparison, the deck width is only reduced by 10mm or 135mm with the visible screw connection.

Carbonised woods

Charred black, three-dimensional look, strong character structure

Using our traditional, vertical deep-charring process, our woods are carbonised with pure flame according to the Japanese Yakisugi method, resulting in extremely resistant, durable wood products with a unique, black charred surface structure which, thanks to its exclusive character, is also compared to alligator skin, silk wood or leather.

Refined woods

Traditionally carbonised, brushed and carefully finished by hand.

If you opt for the refined style, the already carbonised wood is then carefully brushed by hand and refined using a special process so that the grain and structure are revealed under the layer of carbon. Depending on the processing and type of wood, our wood finishing creates an exclusive colour look: from elegant silver-grey to an ingenious reclaimed wood look in rustic brown tones.

All the advantages of refined spruce at a glance

  • Improved weather resistance, resilience and durability

The natural weather resistance of the spruce wood is further improved by the traditional, deep carbonization with pure flame: this is because the wood cells become denser as a result of our deep-charring process.

This makes the black carbonized spruce wood even more resistant to moisture, fungi, insects, pests and external influences from wind and weather. These properties make carbonized spruce a durable, affordable and easy-care wood product for outdoor use

  • Water-repellent in outdoor areas

If the black charred spruce wood is installed as a facade outdoors, it allows rain showers and water droplets to roll off.

As hardly any moisture can penetrate the wood, no wood-destroying fungi can colonize it.

This slows down the natural weathering process, making carbonized spruce a versatile wood product with good resistance!

  • Hardly any maintenance and care required

Thanks to their improved longevity and durability, facades made from carbonized spruce wood are considered low-maintenance and require hardly any after-treatment.

In contrast to many industrially carbonized woods and painted or glazed facades, our traditionally carbonized wooden facades do not crumble or develop unsightly cracks.

Only the patina changes slowly and gradually over several years in a natural process.

  • No chemical wood preservatives required

A cooperation with the Austrian Federal Forestry Office

Climate change is also making itself felt in Austria’s forests. In cooperation with the Austrian Federal Forests, we are planting resistant, native tree species in the affected regions.

With this forest conversion, we are making our forests climate-ready for the future!

Installation instructions
for installation

Simple installation of the Ennobled wood

Our carbonized and refined woods are basically just as easy and uncomplicated to install as conventional wooden facades and wall cladding. The construction should be carried out as suspended, rear-ventilated formwork at a distance from the load-bearing wall.

However, make sure you use suitable stainless steel screws for installation! We recommend the high-quality wood screws from the Rothoblaas brand, which we also offer in our online store.

Installation types and profiles

Our wood can be installed either as concealed, invisible screw connections or as visible screw connections.

Concealed, invisible screw connection

Concealed screw fittings are very popular : cladding boards can be attached without visible screws. Please note: The UTS* and UTV* profiles can be concealed with screws! Concealed screwing reduces the cover width by 20 mm, i.e. a standard board width of 145 mm results in a cover width of 125 mm.

Visible screw connection

The visible screw connection is somewhat simpler, all other Ennobled profiles are suitable here. With a visible screw connection, the deck width is only reduced by 10mm, which results in a deck width of 135mm for a standard board width of 145mm.

Fastening with matching stainless steel wood screws

For optimum fastening, facades and wall cladding made of Deep Charred Wood should be installed with the appropriate wood screws!

We recommend the high-quality, rustproof stainless steel screws from the Rothoblaas brand. Depending on the type of wood and intended use, there are special screws that are ideal for installing our carbonized wood:

  • For concealed, invisible screw connections and for fastening tongue and groove boards, you can obtain a special countersunk screw from Rothoblaas from us.
  • For visible screw connections, we recommend the concealed conical head screw from Rothoblaas. The black, grey or brown screw head matches the color of the carbonized or refined wood surface, is ideal for all woods in our range and also guarantees excellent clamping power.

You can easily make individual adjustments with our special blends

It is often the case that individual boards need to be cut and adjusted slightly during installation. Here we recommend our special oils and special sealants so that subsequent adjustments can be made easily and without much effort.

Depending on the product, some of these special mixtures contain small carbonized articles. When sealing the cut edges and the end grain, the coating visually matches the carbonized or refined wood.

Our tip: We are also happy to add the right special blend to your delivery!

The different types of installation with Deep Charred Wood

As a rule, you can install our carbonized timber in the same way as conventional timber façades. This means they can be installed as a closed or open facade, vertically or horizontally:

Horizontal or vertical installation

In principle, both are possible. Most of our projects are installed vertically. However, you can also have our Deep Charred Wood installed horizontally. You can find more information on the installation methods for the respective profiles in our Wood Matrix, which we will be happy to send you on request.

Can be installed as an open or closed facade

You can have our Deep Charred Wood installed as an open or closed facade. Each façade cladding has a different visual effect.

With the open facade, the individual timbers are mounted with a certain distance between them. This type of installation creates an interesting, structured, varied and three-dimensional effect. Our smooth-edged and rhombus profiles are suitable for an open facade.

With a closed facade, the wooden boards are seamless or overlap each other. This closed external cladding clearly sets the windows apart from the facade and also prevents dirt from penetrating between the individual boards. Tongue and groove boards with alternating rebate profiles can be used to install a closed facade.

Wood species, origin and growth areas of spruce

The Norway spruce is mainly native to Europe. Due to its striking bark colouring, the Norway spruce is sometimes referred to as red spruce or incorrectly as Norway spruce.

It is also nicknamed the “bread tree of the forestry industry”, as it is widespread in many European countries and also in parts of Asia and therefore plays a major economic role.

The Norway spruce naturally occurs in colder to temperate climate zones, e.g. in the mountainous region of the Alps.

Thanks to its good wood quality and, above all, its rapid growth, it is of great importance in forestry, which is why spruce is also cultivated on a large scale in other areas. There, too, it grows rapidly, but in regions outside its growing area it is more susceptible to pests, droughts and storms.

Wood procurement at Ennobled:
Spruce wood from Scandinavia

Origin of our spruce wood

We source our PEFC and FSC-certified spruce wood from Europe, mainly from forests in Scandinavia.

Our Nordic spruce wood is of a higher quality because it grows in harsh climatic conditions and is therefore more resistant. It has a particularly fine grain and is therefore ideal for processing with our traditional deep-charring process and for our careful hand finishing.

Learn more about wood procurement

We pay strict attention to quality

When procuring wood at the sawmill, we select suitable timber according to strict quality criteria.

We use a special sorting process that helps us to filter out the knot-free and high-quality wood planks and ultimately obtain the typical, beautifully textured wood surface of our carbonised and refined woods!

After sorting in the Austrian sawmill, our spruce wood is also dried for several weeks and then planed by hand in our wood factory and subjected to detailed profile processing in order to optimally prepare it for deep charring.
