Translated into German, deep charred wood means “deeply carbonized wood”. In short, the term deep charred wood describes wood whose surface has been carbonized (i.e. charred) particularly deeply using a special deep-charring process.
This process makes the wood more resistant to fungi, moisture and weathering. Thanks to its high durability and longevity, Deep Charred Wood can be used for a wide range of indoor and outdoor applications.
We use the Shou Sugi Ban (also known as Yakisugi) method for our traditional Deep Charring.
We carefully prepare, deep-charring and finish our wood by hand in our wood manufactory. The manual processing with our environmentally friendly, energy-saving deep-charring process requires a lot of time, skill and years of experience.
This makes Deep Charred Wood from Ennobled a particularly sustainable, high-quality and durable quality product.
Before carbonising, we check the wood according to strict criteria and select our FSC and PEFC-certified wood individually on the basis of specific quality criteria.
In the next step, the boards are carefully planed in our wood manufactory and the wood profiles and edges are finished in your desired variant. This is how we optimally prepare our wood for carbonisation.
We then carry out our deep charring using the traditional Yakisugi firing method.
In this method, three wooden planks are placed vertically and aligned in a triangular shape. The inside of the wood is then carefully lit by hand using a pure flame – without any fossil fuels or chemicals.
This creates a natural chimney effect within the flamed cavity in the centre of the wooden planks, whereby the top layer of wood is evenly charred.
This process leads to a densification of the wood cells on the surface: the wood becomes harder, more weather-resistant and is given natural protection against insects, wood-destroying fungi, moisture, wind and weather.
Meanwhile, we fire the wood until the wood surface is deeply carbonised and the unique deep-charring effect with black, three-dimensional and exclusive colouring, structure and texture is created.
After deep charring, our woods are individually and carefully sealed by hand. Our special surface coating fixes the charred surface so that the wood can no longer discolour when exposed to mechanical influences.
It also emphasises the noble, deep black appearance of the carbonised wood and gives our Deep Charred Wood a very special shine at the end.
We also offer most of our woods in a refined version! The wood surface is carefully brushed by hand and refined in a special process to bring out the grain, structure and natural colour underneath.
We offer finished woods in the variants Nature, Dark Brown, Grey and Great Black. Depending on the processing method, the finish can create a silver-grey shimmer, a natural appearance in elegant brown or a rustic old wood look.
Our Deep Charred Wood comes in a carbonised version with an exclusive, three-dimensional look and deep black colouring. The carbonised surface can be brushed and refined using a special finishing process. Ennobled refined woods are available in the colour variants Nature, Grey, Dark Brown and Great Black.

Thanks to increasing demand, we now supply our deep-charred wood to customers throughout Europe and occasionally also overseas.
In contrast, most other manufacturers use the industrial firing method with gas. The deeper you burn, the more gas is consumed in this mechanical process. In addition, it is often not possible to fire as deeply and thoroughly with automated machines as it is with precise manual labour.
Due to the increased energy consumption, the industrial firing method is considered less environmentally and climate-friendly overall!
Using our traditional, vertical deep-charring process, our woods are carbonised with pure flame according to the Japanese Yakisugi method, resulting in extremely resistant, durable wood products with a unique, black charred surface structure which, thanks to its exclusive character, is also compared to alligator skin, silk wood or leather.
If you opt for the refined style, the already carbonised wood is then carefully brushed by hand and refined using a special process so that the grain and structure are revealed under the layer of carbon. Depending on the processing and type of wood, our wood finishing creates an exclusive colour look: from elegant silver-grey to an ingenious reclaimed wood look in rustic brown tones.
In contrast to other manufacturers, we do not use industrial methods of gas combustion and instead carbonise traditionally with a pure flame in a special deep-charring process. This sustainable process carbonises our wood and makes it much more durable and unique in its appearance.
With conventional facades, the surface often begins to crumble or stain. Not with our carbonised facade: with temperatures of up to 900 degrees, we burn deeper into the wood layer and thus ensure robust stability. In this way, exterior facades remain true to the original for a very long time.
Thanks to the special finishing with the “Deep Charring” process, we seal the wood cells and achieve a long service life. In addition, the deep carbonisation makes our woods appear more three-dimensional – this effect creates a particularly impressive impression on large surfaces.
Unlike many conventional products, our carbonised, sustainably sealed woods do not discolour, even when exposed to the elements. This preserves the original appearance of your facade.
Refining with a pure flame permanently seals the finest pores on the surface.
This method guarantees natural fire protection as well as the high robustness and resistance of our products. Moss, water, dirt or fungi have no chance of settling – so your surfaces remain in excellent condition in the long term.
Thanks to their high durability and longevity, facades made from Deep Charred Wood are considered very low-maintenance and – depending on the type of wood – require little to no aftercare. In contrast to many industrially carbonised woods and painted or glazed facades, our traditionally carbonised wooden facades do not crumble or develop unsightly cracks. Only the patina changes slowly over several years in a natural process.
Using the traditional “Shou Sugi Ban” process, our carbonised woods are not only colourless but also completely odourless. They can therefore also be used as eye-catchers indoors without any problem.

For our traditional deep-charring process, we prefer to use local, FSC and PEFC-certified woods as well as particularly resistant, modified woods.
Thanks to our proximity to the forests and our regionality at our main site in Salzburg (Austria), we source many of our wood species from the local area. Our product range is supplemented with woods from the DACH region and from Central Europe, where certain types of wood find optimal climatic conditions for sustainable growth.

Larch is one of the heaviest and hardest softwoods. Deep charring gives carbonised larch wood a high load-bearing capacity and weather resistance, making it very versatile.
Thanks to its soft, elastic surface, spruce offers a wide range of processing options. Carbonised spruce wood is a popular building material with a good price-performance ratio.
As a sustainable premium product, this modified wood is very durable, stable and high-performance. Accoya® is versatile and can withstand a wide range of climatic conditions.
The real wood Kebony® is available with knots and in a knotless version (Kebony Clear). It is extremely durable and particularly suitable for terraces and facades.
Heat treatment additionally improves certain wood properties, e.g. weather resistance. Thermo-modified woods provide optimum wood protection, especially outdoors.
