The advantages
of Yakisugi

Sustainable. Durable. Exclusive.

Carbonized wooden facades are becoming increasingly popular with architects, designers, private and commercial customers due to their unique aesthetics, structure, color and texture.

The most important advantages
of Shou Sugi Ban at a glance

This is where the traditional carbonization method scores

The black or dark brown carbonized and refined woods are versatile and create a modern, eye-catching look with a strong character.

In addition to their extraordinary appearance, Yakisugi woods score points for their high durability, fire resistance and sustainable production.

Advantages

Traditional vs. industrial
Firing process: the differences

Long durability & high weather resistance

The carbonized wood surface offers natural protection against fungi, mould, rot, insects, rainwater, wind and weather. Even without additional treatment, carbonized timber facades are resistant to the effects of the weather. This makes subsequent treatment with chemical wood preservatives superfluous!

In contrast to conventional wooden facades, which discolour or crumble in places over time due to increased exposure to sunlight, rain or other weather influences, wooden façades carbonized with Shou Sugi Ban transform much more slowly and as a whole. Only the overall appearance of the carbonized wood cladding changes slightly over the years, depending on the type of finish.

Black carbonized walls, for example, take on a silvery sheen over time. The result is a new, unique look that does not require regular maintenance or re-treatment – unlike glazed or painted wooden facades, which need to be repainted every few years.

Unique structures, exclusive colors and special textures

The Shou-Sugi-Ban method is used to create characteristic wood surfaces with a charred black, shiny silver or dark brown look.

Depending on the form of refinement, the structures, color tones and grains of the wood are accentuated in different ways.

Typical of carbonized woods is the elegant texture of the surface, which is often compared to fine leather or the look of crocodile skin.

Brushing the top layer of carbon brings out the underlying wood structure, grain and natural color. The appearance of these refined woods therefore varies from a silvery shimmer to a rustic old wood look.

Improved fire resistance

The people of ancient Japan discovered this many centuries ago: The traditional carbonization of wood compacts the wood cells on the surface and thus creates a natural form of fire protection.

This effect is currently being scientifically investigated in more detail. However, it is generally assumed that carbonized wood is more fire-resistant than untreated wood!

Sustainability through traditional firing process with pure flame

In the traditional, vertical Yakisugi technique, the wood surface is carbonized with pure flame. This method is considered to be particularly sustainable and environmentally friendly, as it completely dispenses with fossil fuels such as natural gas or chemicals.

In addition, carbonization causes the wood cells to become denser, which naturally increases the wood’s resistance to weathering. There is therefore no need to coat the wood with chemical, environmentally harmful wood preservatives!

By the way: Ennobled has developed a special deep-charring process in which the wood surface is flamed particularly deeply – without any energy input!

The industrial burning process is different: Here, the wood is flamed using the fossil fuel gas. Industrial carbonization is considered a less climate-friendly option with higher CO2 consumption.

Versatile areas of application

Thanks to its high durability, robustness and weather resistance, black charred yakisugi wood is suitable for a wide range of applications: From exterior and interior facades to wood cladding for furniture, fences or even saunas.

Shou Sugi Ban can also be used in a variety of ways visually, as the traditionally carbonized wood is available in different finishes – from elegant black to refined variants in brown and silver tones, where the wood surface is brushed and the underlying layer is revealed.
