Industrially carbonised fir after Yakisugi

Modernised carbonisation method in comparison

Fir wood processed according to Yakisugi

For an investigation into the possible improvement of the industrial process of Yakisugi, the traditional Japanese wood charring method, fir wood was tied together to form a triangular prism and charred.

In contrast to the traditional method, the charring process was not started with a paper ball but by flames from a gas burner. The charring time was therefore significantly shorter, but the thickness of the charred layer was considerably less than with traditional ignition using paper.
